Let's break down some of the most commonly used wellness terms. I've tried to explain them in a way that actually makes them understandable to us mere mortals!

Holistic health – more than just a healthy body

When someone talks about holistic health, they mean an approach that looks at the whole person. It's not just about how your body functions, but also about your mental well-being, emotional life, and even spiritual aspects.

You know, sometimes you can be perfectly healthy physically but still feel down or stressed. That's where the holistic perspective comes in – it reminds us that all parts of our well-being are connected. A bit like a puzzle where each piece is needed to create a complete picture. A good first step is a health examination which gives you a clear picture of your current situation.

Mindfulness – being here and now (for real)

Okay, I know “mindfulness” has become something of a buzzword, but there’s actually a deeper meaning behind the term. Basically, it’s about the ability to be completely present in the moment – ​​to pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment.

It may sound simple, but when was the last time you tried to eat a meal without checking your phone? Or take a walk without listening to anything? Being truly present is harder than you might think in our constantly connected world.

Stress resilience – the art of bouncing back

We often talk about stress as something only negative, but did you know that short-term stress can actually be good for us? The problem arises when stress becomes long-term. Stress resilience is about the ability to handle and recover from stressful situations without being broken by them.

Think of it as your mental resilience – how quickly you can return to your normal state after a period of stress. Some people seem to have this ability naturally, but the good news is that it’s something anyone can develop over time.

HIIT vs. Tabata – what's the difference?

HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training and involves alternating periods of intense effort with shorter recovery periods. But did you know that Tabata is actually a specific form of HIIT? A Tabata workout consists of 20 seconds of maximum effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated 8 times (4 minutes total).

Many people who say they do Tabata don't actually follow the exact protocol – and that's okay! But it can be good to know the difference.

Many new dietary recommendations are therefore about eating foods that benefit your good gut bacteria – such as fiber, fermented foods and prebiotics.

There are many misconceptions about various wellness concepts. Here are some of the most common:

“Detox” – does the body really need to be cleansed?

Detox diets have become incredibly popular, but the truth is that your body has its own built-in purification system – primarily the liver and kidneys. They work around the clock to filter out harmful substances.

That doesn't mean detox diets are pointless. Eating nutritious foods and drinking plenty of water support the body's natural cleansing processes. But expensive juices or pills that claim to "cleanse toxins" rarely have scientific backing.

“Boost the immune system” – is it really possible?

We often hear that certain foods or supplements can “boost the immune system,” but the phrase is actually misleading. An overactive immune system can lead to allergies and autoimmune diseases.

What we really want is a balanced immune system that responds just right when needed. So instead of “boosting” we should talk about “supporting” or “balancing” the immune system through healthy habits.
